Holiday KTV

"....Knock three times on the ceiling if you want me, oh, twice on the pipe, if the answer is no."  Remember that song that's always sung in karaoke bars everywhere? Well, it was sung beautifully last night yet again at the famous Taiwan Holiday KTV. This is something I've done a few times here in Taiwan that's easily become one of my top 10 must do in Taiwan. Yes, you can sing karaoke almost anywhere in the world, but what makes the Taiwan experience slightly different. So here's how it goes. KTV is a little different from most karaoke nights in the bars in the US. (Karaoke like the ones in the US would be referred to as OK in Taiwan, different from KTV) There are many different rooms with couches and a huge plasma screen tv where a party can go in and the rates are different for the number of hours that you stay. So for instance, last night there were about 11 of us friends (from Germany, Colombia, US, Palau) that went to a Holiday KTV. So we got in ...

Remembering the Struggle but Taking a Moment to Acknowledge a Win - LANY

This intervention was made during a UNDP Multi Country Programme Document Mid-Term Review at the UNDP Office in Suva, Fiji on May 14, 2025 while Shelley Remengesau and I accompanied Ms. Villaney Remengesau.  I share this a week after her successful election to the Committee on Rights of Persons with Disabilities. As the most senior official among us, I had to say something. So this is what I said..... "I was sitting here debating whether we should stay at this meeting or not. We are the only delegation with a person with a different ability who was pushed through a narrow hall to the end of the room, scanning all the beautiful ta...

1 Week Before Christmas

It's one week before Christmas and just when I was being selfish and thinking of all that I will be missing out on during the holidays season with my family and my local church, I failed to realize that there are others who are not even capable of thinking about Christmas because of their day-to-day problems. After what started off as a well-planned weekend that was supposed to be fun-filled, I heard news from home about someone very near and dear to my heart that just made my heart sink to places I had not imagined possible. I wish I was elsewhere right now, preferably home. I feel for he who feels that he has no one who cares about his well-being. I am caught between a rock and a hard place not knowing what to do. If I say something, I feel like I would be too forth-coming, if I don't say anything, I risk something worse happening. I think I will say something to the right people and hopefully help somehow. I never saw myself dealing with something like this. I have never had...
