Holiday KTV

"....Knock three times on the ceiling if you want me, oh, twice on the pipe, if the answer is no."

Remember that song that's always sung in karaoke bars everywhere? Well, it was sung beautifully last night yet again at the famous Taiwan Holiday KTV. This is something I've done a few times here in Taiwan that's easily become one of my top 10 must do in Taiwan. Yes, you can sing karaoke almost anywhere in the world, but what makes the Taiwan experience slightly different. So here's how it goes. KTV is a little different from most karaoke nights in the bars in the US. (Karaoke like the ones in the US would be referred to as OK in Taiwan, different from KTV) There are many different rooms with couches and a huge plasma screen tv where a party can go in and the rates are different for the number of hours that you stay. So for instance, last night there were about 11 of us friends (from Germany, Colombia, US, Palau) that went to a Holiday KTV. So we got in at around 11pm and got the cheapest rate which is about NT$370 (US$10) per person and we would have the room until 6am.   Here's the better end of this deal, there's a buffet of food and drinks available until 3:30am. The buffet includes creamy pesto pasta, chicken nuggets, stir fried beef, french fries, rice, curry, egg drop soup, fried rice, fried noodles, stir fried veggies, and much much more. The drinks are all non-alcoholic, an assortment of juice and soft drinks. They do serve alcohol but it is much pricier. For an extra NT$400 per room, you can bring in your own alcohol and drink it. Or you can be like us, and smuggle your vodka in there and take advantage of the assortment of drinks that you can use for mix. Might I add that it's right across a 7-11 on a little alley which sells hard liquor and beer all throughout the night. So keep your vodka on the DL (down low) and you should be fine with a bottle of absolute inside that big "grade a imitation" coach handbag, and you have yourself a great time. So, needless to say, I had to come in to my internship this morning so my holiday KTV night only lasted until about 4am and I decided to go home which is only about 5 minutes by cab which means my cab ride home is only US$3. So, it was a great night cause it was thirsty Thursday for me and the weekend started off on a good note. Toodles! Off to lunch now with my buddies Kevin, Scotty, and Melanch at HUGE Burger. Hopefully it soaks up some of that vodka. No worries, I'm definitely functional here at the office, I just signed off on some deliveries with my Chinese name pretty legibly, that means I'm great! God bless all. :)

Remembering the Struggle but Taking a Moment to Acknowledge a Win - LANY

This intervention was made during a UNDP Multi Country Programme Document Mid-Term Review at the UNDP Office in Suva, Fiji on May 14, 2025 while Shelley Remengesau and I accompanied Ms. Villaney Remengesau.  I share this a week after her successful election to the Committee on Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The fight never ends, but we can take a moment to acknowledge this win. Kudos to you.  The Scene: The review started half an hour late and when we walked in while Lany was being pushed in, the Palau flag was missing and they were wheeling Lany behind conference room chairs through a very narrow space to the end of the room with no easy access to exit. As the most senior official among us, I had to say something. So this is what I said..... "I was sitting here debating whether we should stay at this meeting or not. We are the only delegation with a person with a different ability who was pushed through a narrow hall to the end of the room, scanning all the beautiful ta...

1 Week Before Christmas

It's one week before Christmas and just when I was being selfish and thinking of all that I will be missing out on during the holidays season with my family and my local church, I failed to realize that there are others who are not even capable of thinking about Christmas because of their day-to-day problems. After what started off as a well-planned weekend that was supposed to be fun-filled, I heard news from home about someone very near and dear to my heart that just made my heart sink to places I had not imagined possible. I wish I was elsewhere right now, preferably home. I feel for he who feels that he has no one who cares about his well-being. I am caught between a rock and a hard place not knowing what to do. If I say something, I feel like I would be too forth-coming, if I don't say anything, I risk something worse happening. I think I will say something to the right people and hopefully help somehow. I never saw myself dealing with something like this. I have never had...
