Where in the world is Landi?

So as promised in my email, here is a map of Taiwan. Here are some basic facts about Taiwan.

-Other names: Republic of China, Formosa
-245 miles long and 89 miles wide
-Located off the Southeast coast of China
-Separated from China by the East China Sea and the    Taiwan Strait
-Population: 22,974,347

So here's my 10-second version of the history of Taiwan. If you're really interested in it, you can do your own research or let me know and I'll email you copies of my readings from my classes to answer any further questions you might have regarding Taiwan, its government and politics. (Haha! I know, boring stuff.) So basically, Taiwan has an indigenous peoples population who originally owned the lands. Then they were discovered by the Portuguese who named the island Formosa (meaning beautiful). After the European occupation, the Japanese occupied the island until the Shimonoseki Treaty where the island was returned to the Qing Empire. After the Qing Empire fell in Mainland China, the KMT (Kuomintang or Nationalist Party) took over under the leadership of Sun Yat-Sen and then Chiang Kai-Shek but with the rise of Communism, the KMT went in to Civil War with the opposing Chinese Communist Party (CCP) under the leadership of Mao Zedong. The KMT eventually retreated and fled to the island of Taiwan for what they deemed then as only a short term stay where they will be able to gather up more resources and return to fight in the mainland. The return to the mainland has not happened til this day and the Han majority of Mainland China have since taken over the island of Taiwan and the indigenous peoples are now a minority in this island. So there. That's your daily trivia about Taiwan. By the way, Taiwan is not really recognized as a country and its status in both international governmental and non-governmental organizations varies. But it does have formal diplomatic ties with countries such as Palau and various other countries in Africa and Central America.

And where do I live.......

And this is where I live....
This is a map of the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) in Taipei. I use this as it will give you the best idea of where I live. So looking at the map above, I live right outside Taipei, in what is now called New Taipei City so we're still connected to the MRT route. Anyway, look down on this route map, locate Qizhang which is on the green line that has the light green one-stop connection. I live right above the Qizhang MRT Station. There's 3 identical complexes that are all connected to the MRT Station at Qizhang and I live on the 17th floor of one of the complexes above the MRT Station. It's quite convenient and pretty easy to give directions and explain to people where I live. It's awesome! :)

Holiday KTV

"....Knock three times on the ceiling if you want me, oh, twice on the pipe, if the answer is no."  Remember that song that's always sung in karaoke bars everywhere? Well, it was sung beautifully last night yet again at the famous Taiwan Holiday KTV. This is something I've done a few times here in Taiwan that's easily become one of my top 10 must do in Taiwan. Yes, you can sing karaoke almost anywhere in the world, but what makes the Taiwan experience slightly different. So here's how it goes. KTV is a little different from most karaoke nights in the bars in the US. (Karaoke like the ones in the US would be referred to as OK in Taiwan, different from KTV) There are many different rooms with couches and a huge plasma screen tv where a party can go in and the rates are different for the number of hours that you stay. So for instance, last night there were about 11 of us friends (from Germany, Colombia, US, Palau) that went to a Holiday KTV. So we got in ...

1 Week Before Christmas

It's one week before Christmas and just when I was being selfish and thinking of all that I will be missing out on during the holidays season with my family and my local church, I failed to realize that there are others who are not even capable of thinking about Christmas because of their day-to-day problems. After what started off as a well-planned weekend that was supposed to be fun-filled, I heard news from home about someone very near and dear to my heart that just made my heart sink to places I had not imagined possible. I wish I was elsewhere right now, preferably home. I feel for he who feels that he has no one who cares about his well-being. I am caught between a rock and a hard place not knowing what to do. If I say something, I feel like I would be too forth-coming, if I don't say anything, I risk something worse happening. I think I will say something to the right people and hopefully help somehow. I never saw myself dealing with something like this. I have never had...

Over the past weekend

This is what a rainy day looks like on my campus.  That's in front of my building looking into the track.  This is our little cafe on the first floor of my college.  College of Social Science. I was gonna take a picture of this spaghetti they sell in a hot dog bun. LoL.  This is one of my favorite places in Taipei. Alleycat's.  They serve great pizzas, draft beer, and calzones. Pictured below is beer and pizza from there.   This is my French friend Jerome who went to the movies with me where we watched The Lady. He's not high I promise, he just reacted to the flash of my camera.  We had a farewell dinner for one of our Palauan friends.  This is what a meal looks like when ordered in most places in Taiwan. Rice, some sort of meat dish, pickled vegetable, stir fried vegetable, tofu, fruit, and soup.  Kevin and Danica  We were roomies last year. Melanch, Danica, and I. Don't...
